Dillon’s supermarket on Aug. 30 was presenting Melissa’s-brand Hatch chiles outside its west side store in Manhattan, KS.
One of the store’s produce workers, Melissa Sisk, was usiing a roaster for the display. She said customers tend not to know how, or want to, roast the chiles, so she was selling roasting chiles from the sidewalk display. She said the rotisserie tends to take the skin off the chiles, which is the preferred status for the roasted pepper.
In the produce department, she said most customers prefer loose Hatch displays as compared to buying large consumer bags, but she added that many customers will pay $32.25 for an entire Melissa’s case.
She expects Dillon’s to be offering Hatch peppers until the weekend of Sept. 12.
