One Banana has implemented various initiatives for the efficient use and management of water in its plantations, as a commitment to guarantee sustainability as a key pillar of development.

The announcement coincides with One Banana’s participation in World Water Day on March 22, established by the United Nations in 1993.

Among the initiatives One Banana has implemented are:

  • Investing in reservoirs to capture water during the winter for use in irrigation when climate conditions require it.
  • Developing irrigation technologies resulting in a 50 percent reduction in the use of water in the plantations. These technologies involve TDR, probes and micro spraying to sample and measure humidity in real time and to optimize irrigation.
  • Participating in seven technical river basin working groups on the southern and southwestern Coast of Guatemala for the purpose of promoting rational and efficient use of rivers, mitigating the impact of floods, mapping social stakeholders and users, promoting dialogue and obtaining information on flows through the Private Institute on Climate Change.
  • Building local capacity in the communities where it operates to respond to the climatic phenomena that affect the world, including decreased rainfall, higher temperatures and lower river water levels.
  • Training more than 80 community leaders and workers for 88 hours to implement Local Response Coordination Systems for the management and prevention of natural disasters in partnership with the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction.
  • Holding two certification courses on community adaptation to climate change in which more than 60 community leaders and workers were trained during 112 hours on topics of integrated basin management, adaptation to climate change, risk management and natural disasters. This was done in partnership with the Private Institute on Climate.
